It is true of centrifugal pumps that, when they are immersed in the fluid that is to be pumped, they will perform far better than when they are used to apply a vacuum via a pipeline to transport fluids. When working submerged, there are other risks. The fluid pumped may be corrosive or abrasive as with ore slurries, or carry a risk of fire such as when pumping petrol or oil to bulk tanks. Where an electric pump is immersed in fluid for use, it is also vital that no fluid can reach an area where it could cause a short circuit and thus, one very crucial aspect of the design of all submersible pumps is that their electrical parts must be isolated from the fluids they pump. When the substance to be pumped is flammable, this need becomes greater and special flameproof pumps are called for.
